We started to warm up on Friday with temperatures in the 30’s, Saturday was warmer still and we had some rain Saturday night. Yesterday was warm again and the show is shrinking rapidly. The canoes on the bottom or rack out back were covered with snow last week and now are very much in the clear. I checked to be sure that the water is running under the snow through the culverts in front of the house. If you listen carefully you can hear it as it gurgles it’s way to the brook. Of course all of this means that winter is on it’s way out and it won’t be long until spring fishing starts.
Argy and I went snowshoeing yesterday afternoon conditions were perfect. The snow was deep but stiff enough that we did not sink very far. It was warm enough to be out without gloves, with a bright blue sky. The first order of business was to put one of the canoes back on the rack. It had blown off in the storm on Friday and was sitting on top of the snow. This would be a new challenge loading a canoe over my head while on snowshoes. All went pretty well until the point where I usually step back under the carrying yoke on the canoe.
Today’s storm did not drop as much snow as planned but we did get a good amount. It is impossible to tell though because the wind blew it everywhere. I went to the dog kennel right outside the office door and was faced with a waist high drift. It seems to be light rain or very went snow at the moment. So I imagine we won’t get much more accumulation.
The next couple of days are forecast to be warm and at least partly sunny, a chance to get things cleaned up before we head back into the deep freeze next week. With highs below 20 for a day or two.
