Fishing has been excellent on fresh and saltwater this month. The juvenile alewives are pouring out of the river this week and the stripers are having a field day. Because of the change in baitfish the stripers are behaving very differently than they did even two weeks ago. They are further up in the river and frequenting the shallow places that they avoid in mid summer. Last week I fished on the Medomak River out of Round Pond, it was a real treat to visit places I had not seen in awhile. Yes there were fish in almost all of the old familiar places.
I have had two days off this weekend partly due to the lousy weather and partly an intentional break. I have had a chance to clear my desk of the normal pile of incoming mail and other accumulated items that I need to deal with. It is great to see the top of my desk again.
I was striper fishing in the Saint George with a father and his eleven year old son one morning last week. The fishing was pretty good and I had just pulled up to a new spot. Both of them cast toward the ledge and immediately hooked fish, this is going very well from the guides perspective. I walk forward to coach the son in landing his fish and as I look down through the clear green water I see what I think at first is a big striper. Very often a really big striper will stalk a small one that has been caught, I assume sensing that it is distressed and interested in an easy meal.
