Sad Day

I traveled to New Jersey over the weekend for the Thanksgiving Holiday but we learned once we arrived that my father in-law had passed away the night we arrived. His passing was not unexpected he had been in the hospital for a long stretch and then came home briefly only to return a short while later. Everyone worked together to make the arrangements for a funeral only a few days later with a holiday in the middle.

George Nestor was a true hero having been a decorated soldier in World War II having fought in Africa, Italy, landed at Normandy and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in Germany and shipped home. Read his obituary in the Atlantic City Press.

The thing that I find most remarkable was that he and his counterparts simply came home after the war and went to work raising families and taking an active place in their communities. No long drawn out wondering what the right thing to do was for tehm. I guess that Tom Browkaw may have it right, they were the greatest generation. Goerge and Sophie managed to make a huge mark on their community. I wonder if we in the next generation are measuring up to the high standard they have set. Thinking about all of this has certainly made me take all of my responsibilities more seriously.
