Stripers everywhere!

The striper fishing continues to be quite good on the Saint George. Today was a little slower but I think that the slack high tide had a lot to do with that. It was a nice run of fat fish though. A couple fish were big enough to be kept if we had wanted to. The birds were hanging around but did not look like they were expecting bait to be chased to the surface. I guess even gulls have standards.

One of my sons friends caught a striper in Seven Tree Pond at Ayer Park in Union. I hear reports of stripers every summer and have always wondered if it was someone that did not really know what they were looking at reporting a big perch or something like that. These two boys have striper fished with me many times and know exactly what they saw and they took a picture with a phone. I have not yet seen the picture but am confident in their report. So it is true the stripers will come a long ways up into the fresh water. It makes sense there is nothing to stop them and the river is pretty much fresh water by the time they are in Warren Village. I wonder what that will mean to our fresh water fisheries? Or even better I can run my striper trips right here in Union, think of the gas I’ll save.

I did notice a few terns today the first ones I have seen this season. There is a small flock of drake white winged surf scoters up in the river. They look lost but there is a bunch hanging around every summer. These are noticeable because they still have their full breeding plumage and are as striking as a black and white bird can be. It is easy to see why the old timers called them skunk heads.
