Yesterday morning I headed down the Saint George River for a little mackerel fishing. I got down about half way and noticed that there were no other boats out but figured that as I got near Port Clyde there would be at least a few. To my surprise not a one. The lobstermen have tied up their boats because the market price for lobster is less than they can catch them for and of course it is mid week so there is not much recreational boating.
It was sort of eerie to be out among the islands alone. Usually there is at least one lobsterman in view at all times and the sound of a diesel engine is usually in the background. Not yesterday! In fact that early in the morning you could plainly hear the birds singing on the nearby islands. My trip down on a glassy morning.
Lots of lobster fishing gear but no lobstermen! As much as I enjoy the quiet I hope that the lobster price rises and the fishermen are back to work soon.
