Seal Pups

Last week I had three Scenic Maine Coast Boat trips, two on the saltwater and one on the fresh. Two of them were part of the LeVatout Nature Discoveries package with a couple on their honeymoon.

As we got down toward the islands at the mouth of the Saint George River I was looking to get a good view of a seal. We had only seen one briefly on the Enjoying lunch on board the Lundtrip downriver and I wanted them to see one close up. Since the tied was low I thought that we were sure to see a few hauled out on some of the favorite ledges but that was not the case. I saw one seal between a couple of islands and decided to see if i could get through the narrow opening at low tide. I could and there must have been two dozen seals with pups hauled out on a small ledge. Conditions were nearly perfect and i was able to use the trolling motor to ease around the ledge at a distance but since the tide was low and bottom sandy it was quite possible to watch them dive and swim as we went by. My first trips of this sort are usually a month later and the pups are quite a bit more independent seeing them this young was quite a treat. Sorry no pictures I was simply too busy running the boat and watching the seal show.

Picture of us at enjoying lunch later that day. The summer sea breeze was quite evident that day. Windy in the river and almost flat calm toward the ocean. So windy on the way out that I wondered if we wold have to turn back. The wind was still blowing on the way back just like it had been on the way out. The ride was much more comfortable on the return trip though.

There are a few more of the trips scheduled for the next couple of weeks but this trip has set the standard for me!
