What a morning!

This morning’s scenic Maine boat trip was nothing less than outstanding. The weather was perfect; there was not a ripple on the water’s surface when we left the dock at 9 temperatures in the 60s without a cloud in the sky. Travelling upriver we saw a half dozen eagles and a river otter! Pretty unusual to see an otter out swimming like that for me.

Heading downriver we stopped at the usual sights along the river including the Olsen House in Maple Juice Cove. When we came past Howard Head at the mouth of the river we watched an eagle out over the river fishing. As he went down we could see many fish splashing to get away. Being one to check into lots of fish activity at any time I motored over to see what the story was. There chasing bait on the surface were schools of mackerel. I scrambled around for the coupe of freshwater rods in the locker and quickly we were casting into splashing mackerel and had fish on!

The surface activity lasted only a couple of minutes before moving or disappearing but we were able to get onto schools of surface feeding mackerel several times. We completed the trip riding through Port Clyde Harbor, past Marshall Point Light and then turned back toward Thomaston Harbor. One interesting note the Monarch Butterfly migration is in full swing, we passed dozens of them making their way along the coast.

All in all about a perfect morning on the water! Fall will be here soon so we need to get out and savor these perfect days.
