I attended a meeting of the staff and board of the Maine Conservation School last evening. We had an interesting discussion of what changes the staff sees as needed at the school. One of the issues we discussed was fees and how to hold them down to make the program affordable for as many Maine kids as possible. A part of the discussion that we did not have was what value the school is delivering to the kids and are they getting a good return on their investment of time and money.
We reach a point in late August where it is obvious that a change is underway. For me there are signs like the goldenrod coming into bloom and the shorebird migrations getting started. But I know that it is here when the light begins to flatten out and I can’t see into the water like I could a month ago. Even with polarized glasses it becomes more difficult to see into the water and see rocks and or fish.
The 50th birthday celebration was great. My brother, sister in law and nephew drove up for the festivities. We had lobster on the lawn with friends and family Friday evening, including oysters brought by a friend who works at one of the local oyster farms. (they were part of a delicious stew for supper this week) On my birthday I was guided by my son on a smallmouth bass fishing trip. Spent the afternoon at an opening for an art show that was supposed to include a piece of my other son’s work.
