The long tail of guiding

I spend a lot of time driving in October with trips to Libby Camps and Pittston Farm in northern Maine. In my travels I listened to The Long Tail by Chris Anderson I think that this line of thinking has huge implications for the guide business. I remember when I started out long ago that one of the hotel owners I visited to drop off brochures told me that I could not possibly succeed because I could not accommodate large groups. His rationale was that people did not do anything in groups of less than fifty. He may have been right at the time but I seem to have found a niche in the long tail. In fact I seem to have a hit in the long tail at the moment. I also wonder if having similar businesses spring up around me over time has helped to develop the market for the services that I offer. We all share in the responsibility of explaining exactly what it is that a guide can offer to someone on vacation in Mid Coast Maine . All of our efforts combined develop the niche and make it popular.

Interesting that I don’t seem to spend time explaining what I do to someone on the phone. They seem to understand and are ready to get to the details of date and time. One part of that is the web and customers being able to look over the details ahead of time one and I am sure that the descriptions in my printed brochures have gotten better over time as well.
