Winter on pause!

Winter took a little break for the last couple of weeks here. We had warm temperatures (42 degrees today), rain and fog. Combined they really reduced our snow cover and provided a break from the regular hauling of firewood from the garage to the stove.

I heard the first chickadee sing which marks the change in the season for me an event that usually happens about week later in January here. In the next week or so the purple finches will also begin to sing. Since the birds are already thinking about the coming season so am I. I'm looking forward to getting out and casting a fly or paddling canoe on a warm afternoon.

All of that is simply dreaming we have a lot more winter to go and the weather forecast indicates that my regular trips to the wood pile are about to resume for a stretch. Still it is never too soon to be looking forward to the coming season.
