Short days!

Winter is here and the days are short, we have about nine hours of daylight and an overcast day like today shortens it even more. I drove home in complete darkness at around 4:30 in the afternoon yesterday, a big change from the summer when evening fishing trips can easily stretch out to 8:30 PM. The winter started off in November with a couple of significant snowstorms putting an end to the upland hunting and any fishing trips I was planning.

I usually have the dogs out at least a few times in early December and always plan to do a little fishing before mid-December but not this year. Even with the recent rainstorms there is still enough snow in the woods to keep the dogs from working; the cold temperatures and high water have put an end to my fishing plans for the year.

The last days for both were the second week in November much earlier than normal. Makes you wonder what January and February will bring. I am already looking forward to the ice going out and getting back on the water with pike on the fly rod first on my agenda. Until then I am looking forward to getting out on skis and snowshoes and enjoying the Maine Outdoors.
