Looking back and thinking ahead

After realizing that Maine Outdoors has been around for 30 years I have been giving some thought to a couple of lists. First are the best ways to celebrate that gives something back to the people and natural resources that have made this long run possible. Second recalling all of the amazing memories and opportunities that happened along the way.

On the down side

I have lived through through the careers of seven bird dogs.

Been through four Lund Alaskans and two Grand Lake Canoes (almost)

I was shot by a client while bird hunting in 1996 and still have the pellets to tell the story.

Had a fish hook in deep enough to seek medical attention twice.

Been hot; wet; cold; sunburned plenty of times.

Take two clients on their last fishing trips both wheelchair bound when we went.

On the overwhelmingly up side

I was wearing my glasses on the afternoon I was shot, no way to know if they saved my eyes but it sure seems likely!

Seen dozens of kids and adults catch their first fish.

Taught hundreds a new skill from paddling canoe to casting a fly line or even how to use a compass.

Been with hundreds who were amazed by the beauty of the place that I get to spend my days.

Thoroughly enjoyed every day and almost every client (those that were not enjoyable you know who you are).

Had the opportunity to support some great programs that help others learn about the outdoors. From Casting for Recovery to the local kids fishing events.

Overall a very pleasant run. It is nice to be 30 years in and 60 years old and looking forward to the future.
