Life is full of difficult choices

I have been weighing some opportunities that have come my way in the last few weeks. I was approached about serving on the board of trustees of a small local private college and asked to serve as the president of the local chamber of commerce within a month. I already give a fair amount of time as a member of the board of the Maine Conservation School and the Maine Tourism Association. This is the 50th anniversary of the Maine Conservation School and there are of course events to mark it which adds to the time commitment. The Tourism Association is an excellent professional organization with well run meetings and a minimal time commitment.

I worked for the Ruffed Grouse Society last winter and even though the job did not work out I was still helping the chapter here in the state. Deciding to not help them any longer was made easy by the organizations obvious lack of commitment to doing anything to further conservation efforts here in Maine. An easy drop from my perspective since there are many conservation organizations doing good work here that can always use some help.

I also declined the presidency of the local chamber mostly because the 50th celebration is gong to take a fair amount of time. But I am still struggling with the college board. I would love to do it and the goals of the institution align pretty closely with my own but I am worried about the time that I do not have to give. I need to come to some decision. How do you decide in a situation like this?
