I enjoyed a great nature exploration canoe trip this afternoon; in spite of the fog and threat of rain. All of the recent rain has the river and ponds at very high levels so it was fun to paddle over the marsh at the outlet of Round Pond and well up into the brook at the north end of Seven Tree Pond. There was little wind when we started and only a light breeze when we returned. We had the place to ourselves as there was not another boat anywhere or a person at Ayer Park.
Wildlife seemed to be everywhere. We saw Eagles, (several and some perched very close) ospreys, great blue herons, yellow warblers, red wing blackbirds, many loons and a variety of warblers, swallows and sparrows. A beaver slapped his tail at us a couple of times and hid in the bushes alongside of a brook only to be startled when we passed close by.
For me the highlight was a mother wood duck with her ducklings, she put on the classic injured duck routine while the youngsters hid in the grass. Except for the fog and overcast a nearly perfect afternoon on the water.
