August marks the beginning of autumn, there are subtle signs. A red leaf here or there, a jacket in the morning, clear crisp days and falling water temperatures all indicate the gradual change of the seasons. The falling water temperatures make fish more active and encourage them to feed more actively.
Over the last week I have been on two fishing trips most days and three on some. I know I promised myself that I would not guide three in a day any more but they were such nice folks who really wanted to wet a line. At any rate you can really see an improvement from the hot days in July and earlier this month.
The last few trips have been on Seven Tree Pond in Union for bass, pickerel and perch. All were very cooperative and gave boatloads of new anglers great memories to take home. There is nothing as satisfying as seeing someone who only sort of knew that there were fishing rods, learn to cast and have them actually catch a few fish in an afternoon.
I have had a several fly fishing trips on nearby ponds where the smallmouth bass cooperated in good numbers, proving to my clients that Maine is a great place to be in the late summer. I always look forward to smallmouth bass fishing right after Labor Day, the best part of the fishing season if you ask me.
Union Fair is just around the corner which means summer is all but over. If you have not yet made plans to get out in the Maine Outdoors you better hurry or summer will be over!
