An Interns Perspective

Chris is working at Maine Outdoors as an intern this summer. Most of you will not have a chance to meet him but here is his perspective on what he has done so far this summer.

Hello my name is Christopher Taylor and I live in Washington, Chris with a pikeMaine. I have just finished my third year at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. I am enrolled in their Environmental Studies Program with a Game Warden focus. As part of my degree I am required to complete an internship where I will get a hands on experience. I appreciate Don allowing me to do my internship with him. It has been a great internship and I have experienced a variety of things and gained a lot of knowledge. My focus is on Environmental Policy, I have followed Don to the state house and attended legislative work sessions that focus on bills that are specific to Maine’s outdoors. I have been to other meetings with organizations that make Maine’s outdoors great and enjoyable for everyone.

There is another side to my internship, I help Don with his guide service and get a good perspective on how Maine guides do their job. It is very different than many people think. Guides don’t just go out and fish or go out and hunt there is a lot more to being a successful guide. To make sure you and I have a great time out on the water for a few hours there are twice as many hours devoted to preparing everything. Fishing rods and tackle need to be maintained so it works perfect on every cast. The boat needs to be kept in working order so it doesn’t just die in the middle of a lake. The vehicle that hauls the boat needs to be kept in tip top shape so it can get us to and from the boat launch safely.

Everything must be kept clean and presentable because no one wants to fish in a dirty boat with bad tackle. Guides do a lot before and after a trip so you can have that great experience in Maine that everyone wants.
