Now is the time for some of the most interesting bass fishing of the year. I was on one of my favorite ponds yesterday and the bass were very close to actively defending those depressions in the bottom. I saw many although only a few had fish on them. I am guessing that the next couple of warm sunny days will make all of the difference here in the mid coast.
For those who do not know what I am talking about, the male bass scoops or fans a depression in the lake bottom. Usually in the relatively shallow water at the north end of the pond (because the water warms there first). Soon the females begin to visit those nests to deposit their eggs and for the next couple of weeks the males actively defend the nest to keep everything away; including a well-placed fly.
Because some of the waters that I fish are very clear it is possible to see those cleaned out depressions from a considerable distance (fair warning the fish can see you too). The sight fishing opportunity is exceptional and a load of fun. Smallmouth bass spawn first with their largemouth cousins following close behind. Needless to say I am very much looking forward to the next couple of weeks on the water!
