Brrrr

Yes it is cold fourteen below here this morning and the high for the day was around five at a little after noon. On the up side it is supposed to be much warmer tomorrow. Argy and I went to Rockland this morning and the harbor was covered in sea smoke. The Rockland Breakwater Light was showing above the smoke with the water hidden from view, very pretty if cold.

For those of you in warmer climates sea smoke happens when the air is much colder than the water. In this case the water is around forty degrees making it about fifty degrees warmer than the air over it. The surface smokes (steams really) like a hot cup of coffee. Long ago when I worked as a sea duck hunting guide I operated a boat in the sea smoke a few times. It is very similar to an early fall fog where the sun is bright overhead with the fog all around you hiding most of the usual landmarks.

Sea smoke is not as dense as fog and does not completely limit visibility but still makes navigating interesting. The Portland Press Herald has a nice gallery of images from this morning if you are interested in seeing what it looked like. I know; not Rockland Harbor although some great shots of the smoking sea this morning.
