Our first shot of real winter arrived last week, lows in the single numbers and highs in the twenties. Snowing today to be followed by more cold air at the end of the week. Argy and I went for our walk yesterday and I marveled at how comfortable I was while the temperatures were cold with a stiff breeze. My mind immediately went to the clothing that I had on and how far it has come in my lifetime. Undergarments that wick moisture from your skin and are warm at the same time. Jackets and coats that stop the wind while helping to wick away that internal moisture. All amazing to someone who started in wool union suits forty years ago that were wet to the touch by the end of the day.
I really started thinking about gear because I have been getting requests for guidance from clients and their spouses on gifts. Most seeking recommendations on fly rods to buy. Again it is amazing how far the materials have come. I provide clients the latest Orvis Recon rods on my freshwater trips and Clearwater Rods on the saltwater. Both excellent rods and far better than anything that was available to me when I was just starting out. Clothing and equipment are so much better today. Why are you not out there more?
To make it even easier how about a gift certificate for a guided Maine Outdoors Trip. Then all your loved one needs to do is make a reservation and show up. What could be easier or better?
