It came up again yesterday, why do you include licenses in the price of the fishing trip and why do you even bother to fill them out. The second part usually goes “I have been coming to Maine for years and never even seen a game warden”. I explain that in Maine (and many other states) we fund fish and wildlife conservation through the sale of hunting and fishing licenses. Not taxes not some other revenue stream, simply put hunters and anglers pay the bills. Because fish and wildlife resources are critical to Maine Outdoors I feel an obligation to help fund their management and conservation. There is also the convenience if I write a license I know that you have one and you did not spend any of your precious vacation time finding and buying the licenses you need.
It is not a small hit; a family of four with two teenagers will send $39 out of what I charge for a morning of fishing to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. I am confident that it is worth every penny and I sure you agree!
