Today is an amazing November day to be sure. Warm and breezy with not a cloud in the sky; it makes me think about how lucky I am to have the business I do. I am able to spend a big part of each year outdoors and enjoy the company of many great folks who are there to enjoy the same things that I do. Not to mention a great family to share it all. I hope that all of you are half as lucky as I am.
My regular Tips from a Maine Guide feature in Mainely kids online magazine is now available at Mainely Kids this month's article is "Hit the woods to find your family's holiday trimmings." I enjoy having Heather edit my material and think that the magazine is very nicely done.
The St. George River in Union and Warren has gotten its annual fall stocking of brown trout. I like to slip away from my chores on warm afternoons for an hour or so of fishing in between working on boats or putting things away. One morning last week was warm and wind free so I decided that I would squeeze in an hour of fishing after lunch. I rigged my fly rod, got all of my stuff in the Yukon and drove down to the river. I was in for a surprise, there was a crowd fishing (well not really a crowd, but three other fishermen) on the stretch of river that I like to fish the most. I decided that the experience would not be as much fun if I had to share and I had a ton of work that I was supposed to be doing. So I headed back to the office, as I drove up the North Union Road I noticed an unusual number of crows in the trees in one of our neighbors fields. I slowed down to see if I could figure out what was drawing such a crowd.
Up in one of the trees were not one but two eagles sitting together on a limb. Seeing one eagle has become pretty common, I see them on a good number of fishing trips on both the fresh and salt water. But seeing two mature adults together is still out of the ordinary. I took a series of pictures with my digital camera but they really do not show the eagles very well. I missed out on an hour of fishing but was rewarded with an unusual wildlife sighting. The story and a picture are on my weblog at Maine Outdoors weblog I have been writing the weblog since July and try to update it at least twice a week. Much of what I write about is not included in this newsletter you may want to check it out to see what I have been up to lately.
We installed a new wood stove in the house; replacing the one that we have used for many years that had burned through and needed to be replaced. We are definitely using a lot less wood for the same amount of heat with the new stove. Of course now that I have 6 cords cut split and in the garage it is most likely too much. I suppose that the wood will keep if we don't use it this winter.
