December was a very snowy month here and January seems to be following the same theme. Without going through each storm of the last couple of weeks there is nearly three feet of snow on the ground this morning. Most of it is soft and fluffy not able to hold up even my widest snowshoes. I snow shoed for a while yesterday and sank down at least a foot even with the snowshoes on but it was great to be out. Only Woody the golden retriever tagged along but even he tired quickly in the deep snow. Interestingly he sank up to his chest even in my tracks.
Our stretch of winter continues. This morning it is snowing pretty hard with a temperature of 6 and a stiff northeast wind. The forecast calls for it to change to sleet and possibly even freezing rain tonight before it ends. A morning inside with a second pot of coffeee and a fire in the fireplace. We are scheduled to attend the Portland Symphony Orchestra’s Magic of Christmas performance this afternoon. They may cancel the event but if not we may be making the trek in the snow!
This morning there can be no doubt that winter is here. I woke up at 5 a.m. with only a little snow on the ground but it was snowing steadily. By the time Argy and I went for a walk there were three or 4 inches. By late morning there is every bit of 6 inches. The current forecast calls for 12 to 18 inches of snow before this all winds down tomorrow. The wind is very strong out of the northeast out over the water but we are protected by the hill just to our east and do not get much drifting or the wind chill.
