One thing that I have always appreciated about my life as a guide is the fact that each day is different. The clients are different having unique interests and skill levels, the trips are different and the weather is always a wild card. This week I spent a most enjoyable day bass fishing on one of my favorite local ponds. It is always a pleasure to work out of the strip built grand lake canoe. I like to think of it as a piece of fine furniture and it moves nicely when I put my paddle in the water. The morning was almost perfectly still, with a loon watching us fish along the shore.

A chance to really help someone in immediate need comes only once in a while. I had a chance like that this morning. I had picked up my clients for the morning at their rental house on the river. After a good morning of fishing I dropped them off at their dock and headed toward the harbor. Since it was a nice morning and the tide suited perfectly I decided to fish one of my favorite shallow coves. I pulled up into the cove, made a cast and was instantly fast to a fish that broke the tippet. The morning's client had been using the rod and I am sure that it had a knot in it.

Summer weather has really arrived in Maine. We are scheduled for sun and temperatures in the 80's until next week. After all of the rain and cold of the last few weeks it is great to see the sun and bright blue sky. I had to scramble around a little to find my sunscreen but I am not complaining. The stripers are back in the usual places but the water is very brown, stained by all of the fresh water still pouring out of the river. This morning I had striper about four feet long flash under a fly, tried to get him to come back and bite the fly but no luck.
