Walking in the snow the other day I was treated to seeing a couple of big birds very close. The first was a large tom turkey hiding in the brush at the edge of the road. As I walked to within fifteen feet or so he took to the air with a great flapping of wings. Needless to say a bird that large taking to the air from the ground so close is both impressive and startling!
As I was coming back to the house a pileated woodpecker was working on a dead tree right at the side of the road. This big bird (size of a crow) also let me get quite close before flying off. I assume that the falling barometer ahead of the snowstorm had these birds moving and looking to get in a meal before the storm started. That is where their focus was allowing me to get very close.
