We have had a stretch of warm dry days that have increased the wildfire danger and brought out the black flies. The flies are about ten days ahead of schedule. In fact I always look for the spring warble migration when the flies first com out but the warblers are a little behind the flies this year. The phoebes are back though and we can’t leave the garage door open without them spending the day checking out the rafters for nest sites. I am working on the Grand Lake Canoe to get it read for the coming season in the garage so I have to chase the Phoebes every time I head out to get something done.
I have been doing a little fishing in the Saint George River for brown trout but it seems like the water temperatures have not responded as quickly as the air. A few more days and we will be in the middle of the mayfly hatches and some great fishing. I suspect that the smallmouth bass will begin to move toward the spawning beds in a couple of weeks and of course the stripers will arrive not long after that. I noticed several flocks of cormorants over the weekend on their northward migration. I assume that they are pretty much timed with the herring and alewife runs in the rivers things are beginning to happen quickly. I always can’t wait for the season to get here but it still sneaks up on me.
