Today’s storm started slowly. In fact Argy and I went for a long walk this morning before it started to snow. We crested the ridge and you could see the snow falling in the distance. Not too far away maybe in Jefferson, in only a few minutes flakes were falling around us. By the time we returned home it was snowing pretty hard. After many phone calls and e-mails it was clear that my meetings for the day were cancelled. A found day in the office!
As the day progressed the intensity of the snow increased and there was about six inches on the ground when I went to the post office in the early afternoon. The wind and snow really picked up as the afternoon darkened into evening. The highest gust I noted on my anemometer was 30 mph, of course it was snowing sideways at that point. Right after dark the snow changed to rain as often happens here on the coast. How much snow did we get? I have no idea; it was drifted three feet high in places around the yard and the ground was clear in others.
I let the dogs out of their kennel runs and shoveled out as the rain fell but while I was out you could feel that the wind was easing. Hopefully it will stay warm enough overnight so that we will not be coated with ice in the morning. You can see how much snow is on the ground anywhere in New England here.
