I've spent a fair amount of time out on Seven Tree Pond this summer every few days for a bass fishing trip or to take a family fishing for perch. Each time I do a trip on Seven Tree, I try to make a point of checking up on the eagle's nest in an old pine tree on the far side of the pond. A pair of eagles has been nesting there for several years and I've been lucky enough to get to watch them raise a chick or two each summer.
For the past couple of months, I've seen the parents flying back and forth to the nest, bringing food to the chick, or perched on a branch, keeping a careful eye on me. The chick has started to venture out of the nest and hop from branch to branch in the pine tree, a sign that it is a "teenager" now, and is getting ready to fledge. At some point during the next week or two, I'll probably see the first attempts at gliding out of the tree, watch a few clumsy crash-landings, and hear the chicks screeching and flapping their wings as they learn about flying and coming in for a landing.
This is a great time of year to watch these spectacular birds. If you'd like to come along, you can make a reservation for an eagle watching trip online today.
