October is always a busy month and this year it has been no different. With snow in the forecast this weekend it must be coming to an end. I spent part of my time at Libby Camps in Northern Maine guiding grouse and woodcock hunters.
The dogs are the stars of the show there and both Copper and Rocky were equal to the billing. Rocky (on point in this picture) is now 4 years old and worker. Copper is a seasoned veteran and is often called on in situations that need a slower more methodical approach.
Woodcock numbers are higher than they have been for a very long time. There were good numbers in the far north and as the migration got started here on the coast the numbers are excellent. I would say that many broods like the ones I moved out of the road last spring were successful.
Home now my responsibilities as the Executive Director of the Maine Professional Guides Association are consuming my days. We are completing the campaign to defeat the referendum to end Maine's bear hunt and put many of our members out of business. Whichever way the vote goes there will be lots of work to do going forward. Looks like the winter may fly by as well, hopefully I'll have some time to do a little fall fishing this month.

The Lund is For Sale
Not to worry a new one was ordered last week. As I have
 told many clients, I like to keep the boat and outboard we are fishing out of in excellent repair and reasonably new. The white boat that has been my platform for the last six years will be replaced by a green version next spring.

The leaves are turning and the days noticeably shorter. Here at Maine Outdoors that means switching gears a little. The Lund got a temporary cover this morning to keep the falling leaves out and the dog boxes got loaded into the Sequoia for the coming season. I've been working the dogs for about three weeks now when we all had a spare minute. On Wednesday the training is over and the grouse and woodcock season begin. Read more...
