Yesterday afternoon was cool and breezy with lots of sun. Argy and I launched the Lund Alaskan and made the first trip of 2013 through the stretch of river into Round Pond. It really was too chilly to linger but the first trip of the season is now behind us. Our most interesting sighting was a goose sitting on a nest on top of a beaver lodge making every effort to hide while right out in the open.
After an few initial glitches everything performed as expected the GPS, depth finder, trolling motor and outboard all worked like a charm. Over the next week or so I hope to dig out the rest of my fishing gear and get it ready.
I also took last Friday afternoon off and did some trout fishing in the Saint George River with excellent results. The river is at a pleasant level for wading right now and I enjoyed a few pleasant hours casting flies to some cooperative trout.
So spring is here and soon I will be available to guide every day after a winter with too many days spent in one meeting of another. Looking forward to spending some time outdoors with you!
Getting Ready
This morning is the first to feel like spring. Warm, robins singing and no frost. My thoughts are turning to getting back to the things that fill my summers and fall. All outdoor activities of course and I am one of those lucky folks that has a job that he would do even on a day off! As a working guide I am truly fortunate to spend most of my summer and fall outdoors.

Orvis Days in Bethesda MD
As an Orvis endorsed fly fishing guide I am invited to participate in events at some of their retail stores. I am currently scheduled to be at the Bethesda, MD store on April 27th at 1 in the afternoon. I expect to spend some time teaching fly casting to beginners and give at a presentation on fishing in Maine. Hope to see you there!
Upgrades
There have been some significant changes at Maine Outdoors this spring. Some planned some unplanned but all for the best. A new (to me) Toyota Sequoia for getting clients to the water and hauling the various trailers and boats. A nice upgrade but I am still figuring out how my system will fit into it. Storage for retail items in the summer and dog boxes for the fall all need to be figured out and set up. Read more...
What do You do all Winter?
When I am guiding in the summer and fall clients always ask "what do you do in the winter?" thinking that I am simply hanging around and once in a while putting another stick of wood in the stove. When I tell them that I also wear the hat of Executive Director of the Maine Professional Guides Association I get a nod that says "that must be easy".
