The warm winter had started to feel a little unnatural. Our daytime temperatures were in the forties during the day and rarely going below twenty at night. While easy on the firewood supply it simply did not feel like winter in Maine. All of that has changed at least for the time being. We had snow on Thursday not a lot but six or so inches followed by freezing rain on Friday that made travelling to Portland with Argy an adventure.
Saturday dawned cold and the temperatures never rose. At around three in the afternoon it began to really cool off. By five we were in the single numbers and are at eight below zero this morning.
Snow in the woods, ice on the ponds and cold that makes you appreciate a fire in the woodstove. The dogs spend the cold nights in their crates in the office and think of it as a real vacation. The chickadees and goldfinches are really at the birdfeeder now providing a show right outside the window.
At last if feels like January in Maine!
