Yes I know that it will be cold again and it will snow some more for sure; still last evening as I walked on the dirt roads you could feel the ground softening and the air lacked winters sharpness. Daylight now lasts until supper time and the overnight lows are certainly not bone chilling.
I think back to a couple of years ago when winter gave out in mid-February and I am willing to bet that we are seeing the same this year although we never really had a winter this year. Not much snow and only a few really cold days. In fact looking at the forecast I am wondering if there will be enough ice to safely hold our kids ice fishing event next weekend at Ayer Park.
It must be time to turn my thoughts towards spring. The Lund Alaskan will be ready to go with a few hours' work and a canoe in even less time, another warm day or two and I will be tempted to get out on the water. Although I am very busy in Augusta working for the Maine Professional Guides Association this week, even that looks like it will begin to transition to spring mode soon. Can the first northbound woodcock be far behind?
I am looking forward to being back on the water with you again! Given how busy this coming season looks to be you might want to make your reservations today!

Maine Guides Recognized!
I attended the annual Governor's Conference on Tourism last month. At the conference Registered Maine Guides were recognized for 115 years of excellent customer service. I am fortunate to not only be a working guide, it is after all nice to be one of the recognized, and representing guides as the Executive Director of the Maine Professional Guides Association. More about the award and the presentation.

Quoted in "Guaranteed to Last"
This has already been quite the winter for me already with a feature in Maine Invites You, All Maine Guides receiving the customer service award at the Governors Conference on Tourism to recognize our 115th Anniversary of being registered by the state. I learned while at the conference that I have several quotes in the new LL Bean book; Guaranteed to Last. The book is an interesting read with many great stories.
I really enjoyed the pictures of the old store something that I clearly remember from long ago. Along with a story about George Soule with who I spent hours talking about duck hunting and decoys when staffing a booth for the Maine Professional Guides Association way too long ago.
If you are interested in learning about a great Maine company this book is a great place to start. |
See Newborn Wild Maine Bears in their Den
The Wildlife Research Foundation is a group formed to increase our knowledge of the wildlife that is so important to the Maine economy. They have been able to install a web camera in a remote bear den in Northern Maine that allows all of us to watch the mother and newborn cubs (January 16th) in the den. Take a look.
