So what does a guide do for a vacation? This year it was a visit to the desert and a fishing trip on the Pacific. Argy was scheduled to attend a conference in San Diego, we flew in to Las Vegas, rented a convertible and drove through Death Valley. An amazing place to be sure and as different as anyplace could be from Maine in late winter. We continued on to San Diego through Joshua Tree National Park. An excellent break from a reluctant Maine spring.
While Argy attended her conference I had free time and hired Capt. Bob Day of www.enlamosca.com for a morning of fishing on San Diego Bay. Bob is a fellow Orvis endorsed guide and it was a real treat to watch another professional in action. The bay is very different from any place that I fish. Roughly the size of one of our larger lakes it is surrounded by the city and includes the busy naval base and port. Plenty going on that is for sure and few trees anywhere!
We started at 6AM (the time I like my clients to arrive for salt water trips) fishing out of his shallow draft boat that allowed us to go pretty much anywhere in the bay. I enjoyed casting a fly for the first time since last fall. Many things were the same as a day on the water here but it was at the same time very different. Imagine a place with only 10 days of rain a year. Why you would not even need to own rain gear let alone spare client sets like I have.
I did catch several fish and missed a bunch more being a little slow on the hook set and certainly not setting it hard enough. Several spotted 
and barred sand bass along with a lizardfish but no bonefish came to the boat.
At the end of our time together Bob was kind enough to drop me back downtown near the hotel. A great morning out and a change of pace that I recommend whole heartedly.
Home now with the snow starting to go and the mud everywhere. It won’t be long until I am back on the water and am really looking forward to it after this treat!
