The last few days have been noticeable for cold wind and rain showers. I had fishing trips two days and can report that warm, waterproof and windproof clothes are the order of the day. In spite of the weather the water levels in the Saint George are falling nicely from the spring high water. It will not be long until we are at the ideal spring levels.
My focus both days were pike and pickerel as a bonus we caught a few bass. Because of the high water we were fishing in places where I normally cannot get the boat. It is interesting to fish in the marshes and backwaters that normally are choked with pickerel weed and frogs; well out of our reach. A side benefit is all of the ducks and geese that are around. Teal both blue and green winged, wood ducks by the dozens along with the usual mallards and black ducks. Saturday I even saw a group of pintails an unusual sighting for this part of the world.
The catching is slow and I think that the fish are a little sluggish on the line but it is great to be out. For the next month the air and water will be warming a little every day and I am looking forward to spending more time on the water with improving fishing each time out.
