Spring is the season of young critters that is for sure and this year I keep running into them, more than other years. Last week it was woodcock chicks and this week a young red squirrel. I backed down into the ramp to launch and when I started loading the rods and other equipment into the boat, there at my feet was a young (maybe three quarters grown) red squirrel.
At first I figured that he had simply been in the ramp and was just lucky but as I moved back and forth he followed me pretty closely and at one point I was afraid that he really would climb up my leg. Clearly this young squirrel had not started the day on his own. Did he climb under the Sequoia or Lund and inadvertently get a ride to the boat launch?
I did not have a lot of time so I quickly led him off to the side into the woods. Hopefully someone was looking for him and he is now safe and sound back in the trees. I did not see him on my return so there is no way to know.
Unfortunately the camera battery was nearly dead so I only managed one picture. I know charge that battery at least every few days; I’m trying to remember.
