Back in March it felt like June would never arrive. It is finally here with long days and warm temperatures. Not to mention flowers everywhere (the lupines at the end of our lawn will be spectacular in a couple of weeks.
Father's Day Maine Outdoors is partnering with Sweetgrass Winery right up the road here in Union. I will be offering free fly casting lessons at the winery from 1 to 3 on Father's Day (June 15) afternoon. There will be a tasting of their wines after you develop a thirst learning to cast and I am told area cheese makers will be offering samples. Sounds like a pretty great outing with your dad to me.
Or join me on Saturday the 14th where I will be the Master of Ceremonies at the International Moose Calling Championship in Presque Isle, ME as part of their moose hunt lottery event.
Either way I would be delighted to see you over Father's Day weekend or for that matter any time this summer. My season is underway and I am taking reservations every day (actually you can make them online). Make yours soon!
I look forward to spending time with you on the water or at an event this summer. |

Bass are on the Beds
Now is the time for some of the most interesting bass fishing of the year. I was on one of my favorite ponds yesterday and the bass were very close to actively defending those depressions in the bottom. I saw many although only a few had fish on them. I am guessing that the next couple of warm sunny days will make all of the difference here in the mid coast.

Alewives are in! In a big way this year, clearly all of the conservation efforts have paid off on the Maine coast. I hear that they are in trouble in southern New England but the runs locally are astounding. I suspect that the changes in our river systems really favor their production now. We visited the Damariscotta Mills fish ladder Monday evening with friends and I cannot remember ever seeing more fish in the ladder. The stream was black with fish, in fact the gulls were so full that they were no longer fighting over fish. |
Are the little critters following me?
Spring is the season of young critters that is for sure and this year I keep running into them, more than other years. Last week it was woodcock chicks and this week a young red squirrel. I backed down into the ramp to launch and when I started loading the rods and other equipment into the boat, there at my feet was a young (maybe three quarters grown) red squirrel.
