OK Clearly Spring Can’t Be Far

I drove home from Bangor yesterday in a snow turning to sleet / freezing rain then rain event; not that unusual. What you do notice is the lack of snow on the ground this morning and an air temperature of 49 degrees F. Again not that unusual for somewhere far to our south but early February in Maine, quite remarkable. This picture is looking south across part of Megunticook Lake in Camden (thank you Megunticook Lake Association) and as you can see there is lots of open water. Ice close to shore and in areas of still shallow water but nothing over the deeper or moving water.

My take on all of this is that we are having an open winter that all of the critters are loving. Argy and I have seen deer and foxes on our morning walks this week. All moving around easily without having to negotiate deep snow. With little ice on the lakes and ponds I am expecting an early ice out this spring but water temperatures high enough to make fishing good are still anyone’s guess. One thing about the weather in Maine is that changes are guaranteed. Snow in the forecast for tomorrow!
