A couple of mornings ago I made a trip down onto the saltwater. Not to look for stripers like you might think but rather to be sure where the eagle nests are this spring. I have a few
Eagle Watching Trips later this month. Pro tip; they usually do not move from year to year. Still I like to be sure that I know where they are and without leaves on the trees they are much easier to spot.
So with little wind and a new boat I made my way down toward Port Clyde finding the two regular nests in use and the osprey nest that has been on the point for years now. Nice day for a ride downriver especially over the high tide when navigation is a breeze.
I returned to the harbor and could see dark clouds billowing up to the north and west. The pop up showers that were in the forecast I guessed. I made my way upriver almost into Warren Village. Where the usual eagle convention is underway with adult and juvenile eagles all around. Total count for the morning 15 different eagles and three eagle nests.
I stopped to make a few casts on the odd chance that stripers had arrived and was soon in the middle of a hail storm. Not the rain shower that was predicted but a hail shower with ice bb’s bouncing off of everything. I took the pounding for a few minutes and found no willing stripers. Deciding that heading back to the harbor might be my best strategy I pulled the hood on my raincoat tight and took off. Gradually the hail turned to rain and eventually a heavy drizzle. Full sun on my return to the harbor to load up.
I felt sorry for the couple I saw getting directions on how to use their rental boat for the afternoon, knowing that the showers were only a few miles off. When I arrived home the driveway was not even wet. Go figure! Late spring in Maine always keeps you guessing.
Best regards,
