Labor Day is the unofficial end of the summer season, but someone forgot to tell the weather. The long-range forecast had it warm and dry, the actual weather has been hot and humid. Not any fun at all when it is hot even on the water especially without a breeze. As I remind folks there is not any shade where I work.
Two lucky things this week though first the over busy part of my season has passed which usually means that I am guiding only one trip a day and mostly in the mornings. The other part of that is that there are at least two days off each week. Quite a treat to be able to sit inside when temperatures are in the 80’s. We all want to say that this has never happened before but I remember many a September afternoon that has been too warm to even take the dogs out for a little exercise.
I did have a first last week a party had booked a learn to fly fish trip and I learned when they arrived that my students spoke very little English and that the trip organizer spoke enough German to communicate the important details; like don't jump out of the boat. Needless to say I learned a lot about how to teach fly casting using show and tell. My students were casting well enough to catch a few fish each before we were finished.
Lessons for me were that a lot of learning to fly cast can be almost self taught and second not everyone needs my constant verbal coaching to learn how to do it. I had the opportunity to test my new insights a few days after and yes, I need to let the learning happen with less intervention. Success on that trip as well and it was a lot of fun to watch the schools of perch and sunfish follow the fly as it swam just under the surface. I'm sure talking among themselves about who should eat the fly.
The coming few weeks are not as open in my calendar and if you have fall travel plans for a fishing trip in the area getting on the agenda soon would be a great idea. For the record the maples along the river have seriously started to go brilliant red no doubt the spectacular fall season is getting closer.
