Today has been one of those golden fall days. We no longer have the brilliant reds and yellows of birch and maple. Instead the golden russets of oak and beech. It was raining this morning when I got up at 4 and showered off and on until nearly daylight. After that the skies cleared and the temperature has dropped all day into the low 40’s. The air is clear and crisp with a stiff northwest wind. I wondered why the furnace came on this afternoon and stopped to build a fire in the woodstove. There have been huge numbers of Canada geese in the local fields one flock even has a snow goose in it’s ranks.
The last couple of days have been quite warm and pleasant for working outside. I have been busy putting away fishing equipment from last summer and starting to get out duck decoys and other late fall gear. To keep life interesting I have a fishing party on Friday. We are scheduled to fish on one of the local ponds for smallmouth bass; I hope that the weather is as pleasant as the current forecast calls for. I can’t wait to see how the local fishing has held up with all of the rain last month. October has long been one of my favorite months to fish and I have had some very good days in November as well. I can’t wait to see what Friday brings.
I am also working to clear my desk for my winter activity that includes working for the Maine Bowhunters Association as their lobbyist. I downloaded the list of bills for the coming session and it already looks like it will be busy. Afer a spring summer and fall of spending time with our natural resources I get to spend the winter talking about them with folks who have important decisions to make. Sometimes I can't believe how fortunate I am.
