The ice is not completely out but it was a warm sunny morning with only a little wind and a crystal clear blue sky. The upper stretches of the Saint George are open to fishing year round and get a good stocking of brown trout in the fall. So I thought I would try my luck. The water level in the river is low for this time of year; after all of the rain last fall it feels very odd to say that it is dry. I was able to wade in places that are normally way too deep and fast at this time of year. The water temperature was cold and I was glad to have my neoprene waders on. Needless to say after an hour or so my fingers were frozen and I had not caught anything so I headed back to the office, a warm woodstove and a hot cup of coffee.
March has been unusually dry with less than 2 inches of rain and only a trace of snow. It looks like an early spring from here, but this is New England and the weather could change completely in a minute. By the time summer arrives I'm sure that we will be glad to see a day as warm and pleasant as today was.
As I mentioned in the last newsletter I have developed packages with the Samoset Resort in Rockport for the coming season. The Samoset is the premier resort in the area and I am proud to be working with them. I expect that we will receive a very positive reaction. We had our final meeting this afternoon and here are the packages what they include. They will roll out in the next week with their own web pages and press hoopla but here are the details for you before anyone else knows.
Loons, Canoes & Ocean Views: Includes two nights of accommodations and a wildlife canoe trip for two.
Eager to eye eagles? Listen to loon calls afloat in the mist? Spot seals sunning on the shore? Join our professional Maine Outdoors guides for a wildlife watching trip by canoe and you'll take home memories that last a lifetime while helping the conservation efforts in mid-coast Maine. This package puts you in touch with nature and with the amenities of our oceanfront luxury resort. Price: $476 or $119 per person per night based on double occupancy, plus 7% Maine state tax.
Rod & Reelaxation: Includes two nights of accommodations and a 1/2 day fishing trip up to two people.
Feeling like a fish out of water? Time for an angler's escape at the Samoset. Whether it's fly-fishing for smallmouth bass on secluded ponds, luring largemouths on our shady rivers or snaring stripers in the surf, our guides from Maine Outdoors supply all the equipment you need, from fishing rods to raingear. Or bring your own. Back at the resort you will be dreaming about the catch that didn't get away, lulled to sleep by the sound of the ocean. Price: $596 or $149 per person per night based on double occupancy, plus 7% Maine state tax.
The next small business seminar for guides is Saturday at the Maine Principals Association in Augusta. April 1st is the opening day of fishing in most of the state and I think I miss calculated and everyone is going fishing because I only have 6 signed up for this seminar.
If you are coming to the area this summer give me a call or drop me an e-mail and let's arrange a date for an adventure!
Best regards,
Don Kleiner
