It is raining and foggy here this morning with a strong south wind that is supposed to swing into the north and return us to winter for a week or so. It was 50 over the weekend with lots of sunshine. It will be hard to return to the weather we are supposed to have in March. It is easy to forget that March is a winter month especially after a winter that never seemed to get started.
The turkey vultures are scheduled to return to the area in the next few days. When I worked in Camden for a fellow who cut firewood he always claimed that they returned on the 18th of March. I have not seen any yet but I'm sure that they will be here soon. I went to Philadelphia for a couple of speaking engagements last week. While I was there is was great to hear the bluebirds singing, spring is definitely closer there. Although the Cardinals have started singing in earnest in the last few days.
I enjoyed speaking to the Delaware Valley Women's Fly Fishing Association on Monday evening and the Philadelphia Anglers Club downtown at their monthly luncheon on Tuesday. Both groups were fun to present to and had excellent questions about fishing and what makes this part of the world unique from a fishing perspective. I left the city at around 2 in the afternoon and had no trouble with directions or traffic, sometimes I just live right.
One thing is for sure it makes me appreciate the life that we live in a rural area with none of the hassles of city living, like traffic or crowds. On the other hand it is fun to have a Starbucks coffee every afternoon as a lift instead of my home brewed brand. I like to speak to a few groups each year on topics that I know something about and they are interested in. Give me a call if your group would like a speaker on the Maine Outdoors.
I returned home from my trip and promptly came down with the flu and was unable to get out of bed for four days. I guess that is a sign of getting older when you don't snap back like you did when you were 20.
Several participants have signed up for the Guides Business Seminar in the last few days. I was beginning to think that no one else was interested or that everyone was planning on going fishing on opening day. Even though opening day of fishing season in Maine is usually raining and or snowing and the ice is still thick everywhere.
Reservations for the coming season continue to come in steadily with late June and October looking very busy and the rest of the season starting to fill as well. If you know when you will be in the area and would like to plan an adventure in the Maine Outdoors give me a call so we can arrange a time together.
