Guides Association Annual Banquet

The Maine Professional Guides Association Annual Banquet is always a great time to catch up with friends and given the nature of what we do might be the only time all year that I will see them. We had good weather this year which makes it possible for folks from the far reaches of the state to attend.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife presents the annual Legendary Maine Guide Award, the award is named for Wilmot “Wiggy” Robinson and was presented this year to Gardner Defoe of Kingfield who has led canoe trips on the Allagash and Saint John rivers for over 45 years. The presentation was made by IF&W Commissioner Chandler Woodcock along with Major Greg Sanborn and Lieutenant Dan Scott of the Maine Warden Service.

The speaker was Mike Gawtry from LL Bean on their 100th Anniversary Celebration. The Association presented LL Bean with a plaque featuring a hand carved Maine Hunting Shoe to mark the anniversary and the partnership with Maine’s Guides. The plaque was carved by member Tim Winslow of Washington seen here with me, Mike Gawtry from LL Bean and Matt Libby MPGA Board member.

It seemed so tough at the time and now I wouldn't give those memories up for anything: the sounds of water, white throated sparrows, and the smell of pine...
