Winter is off to a quick start here. A couple of snowstorms one right after another between Christmas and New Year’s followed by clear cold weather. Not record breaking but cold enough that you notice. Gone are the carefree mornings of walking out to get the newspaper at the end of the driveway without a jacket. Putting on a winter coat and boots now add a little extra effort to the trip.
The waning moon is bright enough on the snow cover to make nights seem like a dull day, the woodstove requires constant feeding; in fact I add a stick of firewood almost every time I walk by. The stove requires at least one filling in the night and sometimes two. After a few days it will be obvious who heats with wood because we all have a very tired look from the nighttime feedings.
Even though it is too cold to spend the afternoon of fly fishing for smallmouth bass or even a boat trip to see the eagles it is a marker for seasons to come. It won’t be long now until I am back on the water, in fact I am picking up the Lund Alaskan this morning fresh from its annual overhaul; can spring be very far away?

I know I will get over it but after the first really cold snap of the winter, I always say I am so ready for summer!
