This time of year I talk and exchange e-mail with lots of anglers and everyone is interested in the same topic. Are the bass spawning? Why, during the spawning period the male fish aggressively defend the nest that they have scooped out of the gravel along the shore or next to some object that provides cover. This behavior can make for some fast and exciting fishing. From my perspective it is the best “sight fishing” of the year. Meaning that we can see the fish we are attempting to catch.
I’ve been fishing the last couple of days but the wildlife watching has been impressive. I know my mind is wandering but some things are hard to miss. Friday we watched as an eagle harassed a pair of loons in the middle of Megunticook Lake. I depend on loons to make noise when an eagle is flying overhead but never understood the alarm. It was clear that the alarm is well founded!
